SUMAT Center's Mission to Combat Addiction

Introduction

The opioid epidemic continues to be one of the most challenging public health crises in Maryland and across the United States. Recently, the Maryland Department of Health introduced a new interactive dashboard designed to provide real-time data on opioid overdoses, both fatal and non-fatal. This powerful tool allows users to zoom into specific areas and view trends, helping communities understand the scope of the crisis and how it impacts different demographics.

At the forefront of this battle is SUMAT Center in Dundalk, where Physician Assistant Fahim Kashif was recently featured on CBS News Baltimore discussing the dashboard’s potential impact.

A Tool for Targeted Action

"The new dashboard will help narrow the focus of where to deploy necessary resources," Kashif stated. "It's about education, being out in the community, letting patients and family members know that resources are available. Alongside our services, we aim to address the stigma and isolation that often accompany addiction."

Kashif emphasized that the center doesn’t just offer Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) for opioid use disorders, but also provides wraparound services such as mental health counseling and Hepatitis C treatment. The holistic approach aims to support patients in every aspect of their recovery.

Tackling Stigma: A Barrier to Recovery

Addiction remains one of the most stigmatized health conditions, making it difficult for those affected to seek help. Recent research reveals that over 80% of Americans are unwilling to associate with friends, co-workers, or neighbors struggling with substance use disorders. This stigma creates barriers to accessing treatment, housing, employment, and even healthcare.

Unfortunately, the public and many professionals continue to view substance use disorders (SUDs) as moral failings rather than treatable health conditions. This perception reinforces discriminatory policies and practices, further isolating those in need. SUMAT Center is committed to breaking down these barriers and advocating for evidence-based, compassionate care.

"Saving the World, One Patient at a Time"

Fahim Kashif’s dedication to his mission is clear: "I feel like

I can save the world, and that's my mission – to try to save as many people as I can."

The SUMAT Center’s team continues to work tirelessly to provide essential services to those battling addiction, ensuring they have access to the necessary tools and support. With the help of Maryland’s new opioid dashboard, the center aims to strengthen its efforts in reaching the most affected communities.
