What you did before today doesn't matter. What matters is what you are doing now.

What you did before today doesn't matter to us. What matters is what you're doing today.

The new SUMAT outpatient treatment centers, opened in October 2020 aims to create a welcoming and safe environment for patients.

Drug overdose deaths are on the rise in America today. Therefore, it’s important to utilize the data on hand to understand the severity of the problem. Looking at drug overdose statistics in Maryland, we are able to develop medically-assisted treatment and detox plans to help those struggling with addiction and substance abuse.

Specifically, heroin, fentanyl, and alcohol are the leading cause of drug overdose deaths in Maryland. In fact, 1,212 people died of heroin overdose in Maryland in 2016, according to the Maryland Department of Health. Moreover, 1,119 people died of fentanyl overdose in the same year.

Alcohol overdose, for example, is also leading to devastating statistics. Through 2015-16, there were a reported 891 alcohol overdose deaths in Maryland. And the Maryland reports also note that 464 people died due to cocaine overdose in 2016. Double the number in 2015.

It is because of these statistics that, at SUMAT, we pledge that no one will face addiction alone. We will be by your side throughout the entire process. We also understand the necessity of family support and involvement through the recovery process. Therefore, we will help you AND your family gain an understanding of your addiction through not just our medically-assisted treatment programs, but our therapy services.

SUMAT works to educate and provide multiple treatment approaches including medication-assisted treatment (MAT), individual counseling, group therapy and social service support.

SUMAT Centers walls are painted in gray, decorating with artwork and making patients feel at home with televisions and magazines. We want patients to feel like they are walking into a physician’s office when entering the SUMAT buildings. The intention is to establish a safe environment in which they will receive help, the same as a patient would for any other illness, disease or disorder.

The goal of SUMAT is to be an added resource in Maryland and the greater DC area. We collaborate with other resources like Job and Family Services, churches and homeless shelters, jails. SUMAT also works with community partners to assist patients in making the connections they may need to find employment or housing or outside support groups in a variety of fields.

Every SUMAT patient will have a personalized treatment plan. Our staff conducts an assessment to determine every individual patient’s experiences and needs. To meet people where they are … and help develop WITH each patient the best treatment plan, specifically suited to them.
