Create A Sober New Year's Eve

For someone in recovery, New Year's Eve can be a nightmare with relapse triggers everywhere. Many attend parties where drinking is expected, and celebrate the new year at midnight with champagne. Whether you are in recovery and sober or just trying to drink less, this is one night that is likely to result in the pressures that come with a drinking culture. For individuals in recovery, New Year’s Eve is a holiday that can feel like it doesn’t mix well with sobriety. And, being sober doesn’t mean you can’t celebrate.

There are many ways you can have a sober New Year’s Eve while still having fun with friends. Here are a few ideas:

  1. Host your own party. One of the easiest ways to cut alcohol out of a New Year’s Eve gathering is to throw your own party. The party could be relegated to close friends and family, inviting those you know are supportive of your recovery efforts. You could give the party a 1920s prohibition theme, with a focus on the ambience and theme dancing. Or you could also host a murder mystery night, with each attendee assigned a character to portray.

  2. Get away! New Year’s Eve is a great time to go on a holiday. You won’t be expected to attend a New Year’s Eve party if you’re not at home. Vacations can also be a great way to kick off the New Year. Time off from work and your usual routine can be an effective way to disconnect. And, spending sometime relaxing can help foster better mental health entering the New Year. Also there are several countries that don’t celebrate the Gregorian calendar New Year, and could make great destinations to avoid New Year celebrations.

  3. Keep things small. One of the best strategies would be to keep whatever gathering you have, or choose to attend, small. When in recovery, surround yourself with caring and understanding individuals. Friends and close family members that are supporting you during your recovery who will help you through potential temptations of New Year’s Eve.

Plus there are dozens of sober activities you can do with close friends. For example, maybe you host a movie night, filled with junk food and sodas. Or perhaps spend time with your friends hiking or doing a team activity like an escape room. Cooking is another good way to pass the time with close friends. Organize a bake-off or prepare a grandiose dinner for the evening.

Have a safe, healthy, sober, and fun New Year’s Eve celebration!
